Oahu... Journal Entry - Day 1

13 November

Left New Zealand at 10.30am on the 13th and arrived in Hawaii, 9 HOURS later on the 13th at 8.00pm. Camera still with me...PHEW...lucky it wasn't confiscated. Every passsenger had to be screened - finger prints and photo taken...before being allowed in to the Arrivals area to collect luggage and enter Hawaii officially.

On arriving late at night I stayed at a local hotel. Check it out online - Ohana Honolulu Airport Hotel. I spent two nights there before flying here to Hilo. It was really lovely.

I arrived in Hilo today...Sunday in Hawaii, but Monday at school. The time here now is 12.38pm...but at home it is an hour back...11.38am...and of couse it's the 15th November...while at home it's the 16th...that's what happens when you fly from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemispehere and cross the international timeline.

I have been very fortunate to be able to spend time visiting a Charter School in Hilo, so will post photos of my visit as soon as I can!

Will write soon...or will catch up on your blogs. By the way,,,I'm going to get the students of the Charter School to view your blogs and possibly start interacting with you all the way from Hawaii. Can't wait to introduce them to you all!!!

Oops....I took this photo in the Arrivals area in Hawaii...before I realised there was a sign to say NO PHOTOS or your camera will be confiscated!!!

9 HOURS...and look what I found...spare seats to lie down on...Serena Williams biography...do you know who she is??? Great reading!!!

Small problem...how do you work this...movies, games, music videos...ummm...HELP!!!

Economy class...WOW...and my own tv screen...I AM IN HEAVEN!!!

WOW...look at this...am I dreaming...my own tv screen for 9 HOURS...YAY!!!

Finally...I board the plane...and laugh along with the air steward who's job it was to make the 9 hour flight as comfortable as possible...9 HOURS!!!

Here I am waiting to board the plane...in what is called the Departure Lounge...

Lots of people buy cameras, perfumes, watches, jewellery...this is me pretending to be interested in buying...hmmm...thank goodness looking is FREE!!!

Once going through the check in it's on to duty free...and there's no tax to pay on the things you buy...YAY...Christmas presents

In order to buy $100 USD it costs $139 NZD

Bright pink luggage... Do you think anyone will notice???

Thank goodness for heaps of trolleys to put all my luggage on!!!

Aloha from Hilo in Hawaii

ALOHA Everyone

I know it's been a while since I lasted posted something on my blog, but as promised I wanted to let you all know what I have been up to since leaving you all back at school last Friday. I MISS YOU ALREADY...but have been taking lots of pictures of what I've been up to over here...watch this space!!!

Student Achievement Success - Watch this space!!!

In the past three weeks Mrs Ramson, Mrs Schnell and I have been looking at all those things that are IMPORTANT for you to learn to be successful learners in the 21st Century.

Our curriculum subjects (Maths, English, Science, Languages...) are taught in our classes to enable you to create a future that allows you to understand and feel success.

ASSESSING your learning for each subject helps Kaitao teachers understand what they can do to make your individual learning easier

Last week Mr O'Rourke and I were at a Students Engagement Initiative (SEI) Conference to share ideas about what would make students want to come to school.

I asked R5 what they thought:
  • More out of school trips/ visits (Te Puia, Museum, Waitomo Caves...)
  • More celebration evenings for families to enjoy together (Whanau sports...)
  • More topics that are of interest to students (Fashion, life underground...)
Mr O'Rourke was invited to speak to almost 100 principals and senior managers at 2 SEI conferences about Restorative Practice at Kaitao. He told them that teachers, students and parents of Kaitao were AMAZING! Everyone wanted to work together to help keep ourselves safe and be successful in achieving a quality education. HOW COOL IS THAT!!!

Here at Kaitao academic success is AWESOME, cultural success is AWESOME, sporting success is AWESOME!

Making sure we are doing things that make us want to come to school every day is IMPORTANT.

Discuss with your class what you would think you would like to see at Kaitao that would make you come to school daily. Let me know when you complete this task.

KA PAI R5 for being the first class to start thinking about this!!!

'BREAKERS' - The TALL Achievers!!!

Well, what a great night out I had last Wednesday when I took my 3 billets...Hunter, Callum and Keanu to watch the pre-season game 'Breakers versus American College Representatives'

A big HI to all the Kaitao students who were there too...FABULOUS!!!

On making my way into the Events Centre I was stunned by the number of TALL people playing and spectating. I felt REALLY SHORT!

After the game I asked the players what their heights were, only to discover that my 5'7" was nothing compared to their 6'5"- 6'9" frames (hmm... something was definitely wrong with that picture - Mr O'Rourke, I want some of your height).

Breakers won, and the crowd turnout was AMAZING!!! I know I'll be at the next game, should another one get played in Rotorua, and I hope all of you can make it there too.

CONGRATULATIONS again to Matua Andrew and the Rotorua Basketball Association for organising an INCREDIBLE SPECTACLE of top basketball for students and families to enjoy.

GO BASKETBALL!!! Go Kaitao!!!

Top Basketball team - 'THE BREAKERS'

  • Changing the draw three or four times due to changes in the number of teams
  • Picking up medals, chasing up tournament certificates and programmes
  • Training the school leaders to score and mark games
  • Recruiting older students to assist with refereeing games
  • Filling out forms to permit Kaitao students to attend the tournament

Kaitao top student, top class, top teacher and now... TOP COP - VERY COOL!!!

How cool is it to know we have our very own Community Constable looking out for all of us... FANTASTIC!!!

Cheyanne (R3) interviewed Constable Redaelli to find out all the things he did for our community and the students at Kaitao Middle School.

Did you know that Constable Redaelli...

  • has been in the Police force for 10+ years
  • enjoys working with volunteers who help run the Western Heights Community Centre to help make a difference in the community of Western Heights
  • helps the Police Youth Development Officers, Youth Education Officers and Youth Aide Officers
  • works closely with our local truancy officer to make sure students attend school
  • helps follow up issues that are brought to his attention by myself or Sara to ensure students and their families are safe at school, at home and in our local community
Phew...I feel safe knowing all of that!!!
